Visible packing on main walkway

At the start of semester, visible packing is good for promo. This involves packing the veggies on main walkway, have someone stay with them for a few hours, promoting Thoughtful Foods.

This requires someone to book a space on the main walkway from 9am Thursday to approx. 3-4pm (depending on how long you want veggies to stay out there for – the longer they are there the more promotion they get). It is a good idea also to have a few extra boxes to sell on top of the ones ordered by members. $10 fruit or $10 veg are good because they are small and easy to carry. $20 mixed is also a good size to try and sell. Depending on the weather, you would probably easily sell around 15 extra boxes. Write any extra boxes down on the split list with ‘to sell’ as the name. When ordering produce for visible packing, its best to avoid anything that needs to be cut up as this would be quite difficult to do on the walkway. If there is any time to have impressive looking boxes, this is it! Make sure you have lots of colour and variety.

Before hand, liaise with vollie coordinator to make sure you have enough volunteers for the day. 3-4 people helping set up and pack the boxes is ideal. You will also need volunteers to stay on the walkway in the afternoon; these would need to have strong people and promo skills. You will also need someone to look after the shop while you are on the main walkway- this may be another coordinator or a volunteer who can use the till. It is also worth sending the hub an email about it so they can promote it to staff and students.

On the day, it’s a good idea to get to the co-op a little earlier than usual so you can open as normal and start getting set up earlier. By about 9.30am you want to have all the tables out (still folded up as you will wheel them over to the walkway) as well as all the boxes. Using the trolleys, take all of the boxes and tables to the main walkway and set up. It’s a good idea to have the boxes for sale separate to the ordered ones so you don’t accidently sell boxes that a member has ordered. As well as the laminate signs of the box sizes, having nicer labels on coloured paper on the side facing people walking past helps. Also have a blackboard with a bit about organic produce, weekly and the box sizes.

When the veggies arrive get volunteers to wheel them over and pack boxes. Once they are packed, people will start wanting to buy boxes from you. Have the list of boxes to sell so you can keep track of this and have some change to give people. Also have flyers to hand out.

At the end of the day, boxes and tables will need to be taken back to the shop – having 3 volunteers is good as someone will need to stay with the tables on the main walkway. If there are any left over boxes to be sold but this on Facebook and make sure the next coordinator knows which ones are still for sale.
